  2. I greatly enjoy your videos and like your down to earth delivery. I use your videos to increase my knowledge of the simple life and acquire an abundance of tips. With a world that is reverting back to the basics these series of videos are refreshing little documentaries on every day necessities while living a subsistence lifestyle. Keep on with the videos and I’m looking forward to your book. I also have given up on televison. This occured over a year ago and I do not miss it in the least bit

  18. I grew up with television for parents. I watched at least 5 hours a day.

Today, i wouldn’t own a television if someone paid me for it. And i am still working almost constantly to undo the damage. Only when you leave it will you realize how it conditions your mind.

It’s great that you’re doing the 1 month test. Take this opportunity to observe your mind and the effect TV has had on it. Cheers!

  20. I realised how dependant i am on watching TV and not doing anything else. So i decided to not watch any TV for 1 month and see how i get on.
It gets hard if you are used to watching hours each day.

  22. electricity does make noise is like a low humming or buzz sound if i had to describe it but the silence is quite nice being that live in the city..!

  24. We had a super power outage in Ontario Canada a few years ago….thank goodness it was early summer so not heat needed. We literally lived off the gas bbq…heated water for tea, made complete meals, etc. Candles after dark and it was very nice….what we noticed most was how “quiet” it became…no motors running & believe it or not electricity makes NOISE. It really does. The ice storm here in the middle of winter last yr was NOT fun..the house got frigid cold & it was very uncomfortable..

  26. We just went through 16 days of no electricity when an ice storm knocked out the whole region! What an eye opener that was to how dependent our country has become to oil. My family is taking steps to cut out our dependency on outside electricity (we’ve been talking about it for yr.s) by getting a wood stove, and composting toliet and in the future getting some solar panels. Without potable water, life becomes very difficult!

  28. We heard about this last year and did it for the first time. We liked it so much that we made a “family rule” to have our own Earth Hour once a week. We light up our candles, play board and card games and generally just hang out together. It’s become a really nice family tradition!

  30. Great idea, but one I think I’ll keep for warmer weather, the house isn’t very warm at the moment, even with all the heaters on. The kids love when the power goes out (though it happens by accident), it’s like an adventure where we get to experiment with cooking on the woodstove, storing food in the shed. We make a family time out of it, play games, tell stories, etc.

  32. Going a day without power is a great idea. There is an event called ‘Earth Hour’. People around the world go without power for an hour. The next one is Saturday March 28th, 2009 at 8:30pm. There are tons of people and businesses that participate.

  36. After watching this video on Friday we decided to try it with our sons the next day. It’s Winter here(Canada) so I kept the heat on a little.
Friday was the last day for our cable( I cut it off) So it was a perfect time. I thought it was great..I became so aware of how much power I use, even though I try to conserve day to day. My eldest (7) was mad, but got over it. But my youngest (1&1/2) kept crying and pointing to the TV and saying “huh?” LOL. We’ve decided to try this once a week! Thanks!

  38. Sometimes I like a power cut, especially at night. One night we had a black out, and I just played the piano under candle light for hours! by the end I had a saucer full of melted wax hehe. Reading is just the sort of thing for black outs as well, congrats!

  40. The power went out here the other night at 12 am. It was -35 & probably -50 windchill. I usually sleep with shoulders & one leg out. In night I was uncomfortable by morning it was freezing. My Racing Pigeons are under infrared as they don’t set 1st egg & I hope to avert freezing it. They were out & my best pair layed 1st egg! Block heaters out on buses so they would not start. Dive drifted 200 ft long, 3-4 ft deep but tractor went & sat on it in blizzard 3 hrs. Love my Regency stove!
